Hemp Power

Hemp Protein – The Superfood for Athletes, Vegans & the Health-Conscious

Hemp protein is rightly referred to as a superfood and is gaining more and more popularity among health-conscious people, vegans, and athletes – whether as a protein shake or smoothie. Especially athletes in training benefit from the complete hemp protein.

The world of fitness and health is complex and full of questions, and the list of things to do or not to do is endlessly long. One thing is clear: protein-rich food is the key to effective and successful training. In general, proteins serve a variety of functions – from biochemically active enzymes to components of muscle building and fat burning – and are essential for life and must be actively supplied through food.

Why hemp protein is considered a superfood

The intake of proteins can be of plant and/or animal origin. Usually, with a balanced diet, we consume enough proteins. The question is rather about the quality, origin, and extent of this intake. The body's needs depend heavily on the individual's circumstances ("couch potato" or elite athlete). Those interested in proteins in terms of dietary supplements will find that the list of various protein manufacturers is long. The range available online, in supermarkets, health food stores, and fitness studios is vast. But how should one ultimately find the right one? It is easiest to start with a classification regarding the protein sources, meaning the raw material from which the protein powder is made. Here, as previously described, there are animal sources, such as milk and meat, as well as plant protein sources, like soy and hemp. Hemp? Yes, you read that right. Hemp, or rather products derived from hemp seeds, are rightly referred to as "superfoods." The latter designation is new. However, the use of hemp as a food has been documented for thousands of years.

All essential amino acids in hemp protein

Hemp protein is extracted from hemp seeds. These, in turn, are formed in the flowers of the plant and harvested every autumn. Hemp seeds are used, among other things, to produce hemp seed oil. The approximately 30% remaining after pressing is referred to as "hemp cake." This hemp cake contains both protein and fiber content. Through separations, products are created that have varying levels of protein or fiber content and can be used either as supplements for athletes and vegans or for baking. Alongside quinoa, hemp protein is one of the few complete proteins, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids that can only be obtained through diet, in addition to non-essential amino acids. This characteristic makes protein from the hemp plant extremely special and distinguishes it from other plant proteins that lack one or another essential amino acid or have very little of it. The term amino acid is something everyone has likely heard of, but what do these acids actually do in our bodies? Amino acids are, as previously described, individual components of proteins. Depending on the arrangement of the amino acids (which is determined by the genetic code), different proteins are formed that take on various tasks in the body. Important for training – amino acids play a crucial role and are responsible for muscle building and muscle repair. On one hand, regular training leads to natural muscle formation. On the other hand, during active training, small tears or damage can occur in the existing muscle. The amino acids are, so to speak, the nutrients needed to repair the tears and damage. In short, we need proteins before and after training to provide the body with energy, build muscle, and support the healing of our muscles after intense training.

Gluten- and lactose-free protein for optimal nutrition

It is particularly noteworthy that hemp protein is free from gluten and lactose. This makes it excellently tolerable. A higher intake of other protein sources often leads to bloating or diarrhea. Even with high hemp protein intake, these negative side effects are not observed. The taste of protein shakes also plays an important role for many customers, and in this regard: Hemp protein certainly does not need to hide. Hemp protein has a very natural taste, which is often described as slightly earthy, nutty, and not overly sweet. According to reports, many find the right ratio for personal use and also a suitable flavor after a short time. So, no one should be deterred, as it is more about choosing a high-quality product that suits one's taste. Whether in muesli or as a pure shake (with milk, soy milk, almond milk, or water) after a visit to the gym or as a protein supplier for baking – try it out, enjoy it, and benefit from it!
