New Study 2025: Can CBD Support Muscle Health and Regeneration?
Whether in competitive sports, muscle building, or in older age – healthy muscles are crucial for performance, mobility, and quality of life. A recent scientific review from 2025 comprehensively examines for the first time the role of the endocannabinoid system in skeletal muscles and investigates what influence CBD (cannabidiol) could have on muscle metabolism, inflammation, regeneration, and muscle breakdown. The Endocannabinoid System – an Important Regulator of Muscle Health
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an endogenous regulatory system found in almost all organs. It consists of endogenous messengers (endocannabinoids), enzymes, and the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. While CB1 was long primarily associated with the brain, recent findings show that both receptors also play an important role in skeletal muscle. The authors of the current review describe the ECS as a central regulator of various processes, including:
- muscle development
- muscle metabolism
- insulin sensitivity
- mitochondrial function
- protein synthesis
- inflammatory responses
- regeneration after injuries
If this finely tuned system falls out of balance, according to the study, it can contribute to the development of various diseases. These include, among others, obesity, type 2 diabetes, sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), cachexia, as well as various muscle diseases.
How Does CBD Affect Muscle Metabolism?
The focus of current research is CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid from the hemp plant. Unlike THC, cannabidiol has no psychoactive effects and is therefore intensively studied as a potential therapeutic agent. Especially interesting is the influence of CBD on the energy metabolism of muscle tissue.
Improved Insulin Sensitivity and Less Fat Deposits
Animal experimental studies show that CBD can reduce the accumulation of harmful fats in muscle tissue. At the same time, cannabidiol reduced oxidative stress and inflammatory processes and improved insulin sensitivity. Especially in overweight individuals, a so-called lipotoxicity often occurs – fat accumulates in muscle cells and impairs their metabolism. According to the authors, CBD could help mitigate this process and thereby support the metabolic health of muscle tissue.
Mitochondria – the Powerhouses of Muscle Cells
Muscle cells require enormous amounts of energy. Responsible for this are the mitochondria, which produce ATP – the most important energy carrier in our body. The review describes numerous indications that changes in the endocannabinoid system can influence mitochondrial function. Impaired activity of these cellular power plants is associated, among other things, with muscle loss, reduced performance, and metabolic diseases. Several preclinical studies show that CBD
- can reduce oxidative stress,
- protect mitochondria,
- improve ATP production, and
- stabilize the energy supply of muscle cells.
Thus, cannabidiol could indirectly support regeneration and maintenance of muscle mass.
CBD Against Inflammation and Oxidative Stress
After intense physical exertion, small micro-injuries occur in the muscle. These are fundamentally part of the training process but can lead to prolonged inflammation in cases of excessive strain or chronic diseases. Here, CBD, according to current research, has several interesting properties. In various animal models, cannabidiol reduced:
- pro-inflammatory messengers such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β
- oxidative stress
- activation of the inflammatory factor NF-κB
- muscle cell damage after intense exertion
At the same time, antioxidant protective mechanisms were activated, allowing muscle tissue to regenerate faster. However, the authors explicitly point out that these results mainly come from preclinical studies and cannot be directly transferred to humans.
Can CBD Slow Down Muscle Loss?
A particularly exciting area of research concerns diseases in which muscle mass is lost. These include, among others:
- sarcopenia
- cachexia in cancer
- muscle loss after prolonged immobilization
- muscular dystrophies
In various cell and animal models, CBD was able to positively influence several processes. For example, cannabidiol reduced chemotherapy-induced muscle loss, improved protein synthesis, and decreased oxidative stress in muscle cells. In experimentally induced muscle atrophy, there was also less muscle mass loss and better physical performance. Particularly interesting are studies on Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Here, CBD promoted the differentiation of muscle stem cells and improved mobility in animal models. These results suggest that cannabidiol could support regenerative processes in muscle tissue.
What Do Studies Show in Humans?
While laboratory and animal studies mostly deliver positive results, the scientific evaluation in humans is currently much more cautious. Several studies with athletes analyzed the influence of CBD on:
- muscle soreness
- regeneration
- strength development
- running performance
- inflammatory markers
- bone health
The result: despite some small improvements, no clear benefits regarding performance enhancement or faster regeneration have been demonstrated so far. A recent systematic review from 2024 also concludes that the current body of evidence does not yet allow reliable statements about performance-enhancing or regeneration-promoting effects of CBD in humans. The authors of the current review see the reason mainly in the small participant numbers as well as the very different dosages and study designs. Further high-quality clinical studies are therefore urgently needed.
Conclusion: Promising Research – but No Definitive Proof Yet
The new review provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge about the endocannabinoid system and its significance for muscle health. Especially preclinical studies show that CBD could positively influence various processes:
- reduction of inflammation
- protection of mitochondria
- support of protein synthesis
- improvement of muscle metabolism
- protection against oxidative stress
- promotion of regenerative processes
At the same time, the authors emphasize that these findings mostly come from laboratory and animal studies. Clear recommendations for humans require further clinical studies. Nevertheless, the research makes it clear that the endocannabinoid system is much more than a nervous system regulator. It appears to play a central role in the health of our muscles – and CBD is increasingly developing into a promising field of research for future therapeutic applications.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about CBD and Muscle Health and Regeneration
Can CBD Oil Support Muscle Regeneration?
CBD oil is currently intensively researched regarding its influence on muscle regeneration, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Preclinical studies show promising results, while clinical studies in humans have so far not allowed clear conclusions. Further high-quality studies are needed.
When Is CBD Oil Most Commonly Used for Muscles?
Many people use CBD oil in connection with physical exertion, intense training sessions, or to support their general well-being. Scientifically, the influence of CBD on muscle metabolism, inflammatory processes, and muscle regeneration is currently being investigated.
Can CBD Oil Relieve Muscle Soreness?
Whether CBD oil noticeably reduces muscle soreness is not yet scientifically clarified. While laboratory and animal studies show anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, human studies have so far not demonstrated clear benefits for recovery after exercise.
Which CBD Oil Is Suitable for Athletes?
Those who want to use CBD oil as a supplement in sports should pay attention to high product quality. Recommended are lab-tested products from controlled cultivation with transparent certificates of analysis and legally compliant THC content. This ensures consistently high quality.
Can CBD Oil Support Muscle Health in the Long Term?
Current research suggests that CBD could support various processes important for healthy muscles – including mitochondrial function, protein synthesis, inflammation regulation, and oxidative stress. Whether regular intake of CBD oil offers long-term benefits for muscle health in humans still needs to be confirmed in clinical studies.
