CBD in sports: How cannabidiol could support recovery, sleep, and athletic performance

CBD in sports is gaining increasing attention. Athletes are particularly interested in the possible effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on recovery, sleep, stress, pain, and general well-being. A recent scientific publication titled 'Cannabidiol in Sports: A Brazilian Perspective' addresses exactly these issues and discusses the possible role of CBD in sports medicine.

An important distinction is crucial here: The authors do not see CBD as a direct performance enhancer. Rather, cannabidiol could contribute through various indirect mechanisms to better regeneration for athletes and thus possibly make them better prepared for training and competition. The publication also addresses important topics such as CBD and doping, the quality of CBD products, and the question of how safely athletes can use CBD products.

CBD for Athletes – Why Cannabidiol Is Becoming Increasingly Interesting

Sports place high demands on the body. Intense training sessions, competitions, and short recovery times can affect sleep, mental well-being, and physical recovery. This is exactly where the discussion about CBD for athletes begins. The current publication assumes that CBD could make an indirect contribution to athletic readiness, especially through sleep, anxiety or stress, and recovery. This is explicitly still an unresolved field of research. The authors emphasize that many previous findings do not specifically come from studies with competitive athletes. Therefore, existing results cannot automatically be transferred to every sport or every athlete.

CBD Is Not a Classic Performance Enhancer

An important point of the study: CBD is not classified as a classic ergogenic aid, i.e., as a substance for the direct increase of physical performance. Instead, the authors propose an expanded understanding of the term. For example, if an athlete sleeps better, recovers faster, or suffers less from anxiety and stress, this could indirectly improve their training readiness and competition preparation. However, this does not mean that CBD automatically leads to more strength, endurance, or speed.

CBD and Recovery – What Role Could Cannabidiol Play?

Recovery in sports is a crucial factor for long-term performance. Between two training sessions, muscles, the nervous system, and general physical resources must sufficiently recover. The authors of the current publication see possible starting points for CBD particularly in supporting recovery and sleep. Better sleep quality could, in turn, support physical and cognitive performance.

CBD and Sleep

Sufficient and high-quality sleep is especially important for athletes. Lack of sleep can impair both physical and cognitive performance. The study therefore discusses the possibility that CBD and sleep could be connected through an improvement in sleep quality or a reduction of sleep disorders. This could indirectly support recovery and training readiness. At the same time, the authors point out that corresponding studies specifically on athletes are still limited. Thus, an important question remains open: Which dosage, timing of intake, and formulation of CBD could actually be useful for athletes must be clarified by further research.

CBD, Stress, and Anxiety in Sports

Besides physical strain, the mental situation also plays a major role. Competition pressure, expectations, and intense training phases can be associated with stress and anxiety. The current publication therefore also discusses a possible role of CBD in reducing anxiety and psychological stress. Together with possible effects on sleep and recovery, this could, according to the authors, contribute to better athletic readiness.

Why Mental Recovery Is Important for Athletes

Athletic performance is not created exclusively through physical training. Adequate recovery and a balanced mental state are also important components of a sustainable training strategy. The authors therefore understand CBD as a possible component of a broader approach that considers recovery, sleep, and mental well-being. At the same time, research is still needed before concrete recommendations for athletes can be derived.

CBD and Pain – A Possible Alternative to Classic Painkillers?

Another focus of the publication is the topic of pain management in sports. Athletes sometimes regularly use painkillers to be able to train or participate in competitions despite complaints. The authors point to possible health problems from frequent or improper use of analgesics and therefore discuss CBD as a potential non-opioid alternative or supplement.

CBD Instead of Opioids?

The topic is also interesting because Tramadol has been banned in competition since January 1, 2024. This has given the search for non-opioid strategies for pain treatment in sports additional importance. The publication describes CBD as a possible approach for pain management and refers to preliminary indications of possible interactions with inflammatory processes and pain signaling pathways. However, this should not be interpreted as CBD being a proven substitute for medically necessary pain therapies. The scientific data situation is still developing.

CBD and Doping – What Must Athletes Consider?

For competitive athletes, one question is particularly important: Is CBD allowed in sports? The study points out that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from the list of prohibited substances in 2018. However, this does not mean that all cannabinoids are allowed in sports.

CBD Is Allowed – THC Remains a Problem

While CBD is not prohibited by WADA, other cannabinoids, including THC, remain banned in competition. The publication points out that a certain THC metabolite in urine above the respective threshold can lead to a positive doping result. This creates a significant quality problem for athletes: A product sold as a CBD product can under certain circumstances contain small amounts of THC or other cannabinoids. The authors refer to studies in which commercially available CBD products contained THC. In one analyzed sample, 4 out of 11 CBD products contained THC concentrations that could under certain conditions exceed the WADA threshold.

Why Product Quality Is Crucial

For athletes, therefore, not only the question of whether CBD is allowed is relevant, but also what is actually contained in the product. The study mentions the following quality aspects, among others:

  • transparent labeling of ingredients
  • reliable manufacturing processes
  • control for prohibited substances
  • independent or external product analyses
  • traceable quality standards

Especially for competitive athletes, the so-called Strict Liability can play an important role. Athletes are fundamentally responsible for substances detected in their samples – regardless of whether they were consciously ingested.

CBD Products in Sports: Quality Over Quantity

The quality of a CBD product can be influenced by various factors. These include, for example, extraction methods, formulation, manufacturing, and storage. The authors point out that different manufacturing standards can lead to different product compositions and quality levels. For athletes, this means: A product should not be selected solely based on how high the CBD content is.

What Athletes Should Look for in CBD Products

Athletes who want to use CBD should pay particular attention to traceable product quality. Sensible aspects include:

  • clear ingredient information
  • traceable manufacturing
  • laboratory analyses
  • testing for THC and other cannabinoids
  • transparent information on product composition
  • reputable manufacturers and documented quality controls

What Does Current Research Say About CBD and Athletic Performance?

The central message of the publication can be summarized relatively clearly: CBD is not a proven direct performance booster. Scientific interest is rather directed at possible indirect connections between CBD, sleep, recovery, anxiety, and pain. If these factors are positively influenced, this could in turn support readiness for training and competition. However, there is still a lack of sufficient athlete-specific studies to derive concrete recommendations for athletes.

Which Questions Are Still Open?

The authors see research needs especially regarding:

  • optimal CBD dosage for athletes
  • timing of intake
  • appropriate formulations
  • different sports
  • effects on recovery
  • CBD and sleep in athletes
  • possible interactions with medications and supplements
  • long-term use
  • standardized quality requirements

Thus, research is far from complete.

CBD in Sports – An Exciting Research Field with Open Questions

The current publication "Cannabidiol in Sports: A Brazilian Perspective" shows how the discussion around CBD in sports is changing. The focus is not on the idea of CBD as a miracle cure or direct performance enhancer. Rather, it is about the question of whether cannabidiol could indirectly contribute through sleep, recovery, anxiety, and pain management to better preparation of athletes for training and competition. At the same time, the study makes clear that product quality, doping risks, and lack of athlete-specific research are important challenges. For athletes, responsible use is therefore crucial: CBD is not just CBD, and caution is especially advised with products that may be contaminated with THC. The future of research will have to show if and in which situations CBD can actually take a meaningful place in sports medicine and sports recovery.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About CBD in Sports

Is CBD Allowed in Sports?

CBD itself has not been on the WADA list of prohibited substances since 2018. Other cannabinoids, especially THC, can still be relevant and prohibited in competition.

Can CBD Enhance Athletic Performance?

The current publication describes no direct performance-enhancing effect of CBD. Rather, a possible indirect effect via sleep, recovery, anxiety, and relaxation is discussed.

Can CBD Oil Support Recovery?

CBD oil is discussed in current research in connection with recovery and sleep. Whether this actually results in measurable benefits for athlete recovery must be examined by further athlete-specific studies.

Can CBD Products Lead to a Positive Doping Test?

Yes, the risk exists with contaminated or mislabelled products. While CBD itself is allowed, THC and other prohibited cannabinoids can cause doping problems.

What Should Athletes Look for in CBD?

Particularly important are transparent ingredients, tested product quality, and laboratory analyses. The current publication calls for stricter quality controls and sport-specific testing standards.

Are There Already Enough Studies on CBD in Competitive Athletes?

No. The authors emphasize that much of the existing evidence comes from non-athletic populations or preclinical studies. Therefore, further studies directly involving athletes are necessary.

Conclusion

CBD in sports is a scientifically interesting but not yet conclusively researched topic. The current Brazilian perspective sees potential especially in the areas of sleep, recovery, anxiety, and pain management. Crucial is the distinction between a direct performance enhancer and a possible indirect ergogenic effect: CBD could theoretically improve conditions important for training and competition – such as recovery and sleep. However, a direct performance effect is not proven. For competitive athletes, product quality is also important. Since THC contamination can pose a doping risk, transparent manufacturing, tested ingredients, and appropriate laboratory analyses are of particular significance. The authors ultimately conclude that further research, standardized quality requirements, and better education are necessary before concrete recommendations for CBD and sports can be derived.
