Detox Cures – Trend or Insider Tip? Effects, Opportunities & Risks

Not only during Lent are they on everyone's lips: detox diets and cures promise various results that are supposed to have a positive effect on the body. The primary goal is detoxification or purification of the body to rid it of toxins that have accumulated as 'slags' due to unhealthy diet, stress, environmental influences, nicotine, or alcohol consumption. But what is purification anyway, what happens in the body, and how meaningful is a detox diet from a scientific point of view?

What does detox mean? Detoxification explained simply

Detox is derived from the word "detoxification." Proponents of detox diets believe that the body can no longer free itself from undesirable toxins that have accumulated in so-called slag. A detox promises, among other things, the cleansing of internal organs, skin, and intestines. There are many different cures that have different approaches: raw food diets, lemon juice diets, or complete abstinence from solid food. The methods also differ in duration and frequency. Some people have a detox day once a week, while others opt for a multi-day cure that can extend over weeks. This is supposed to help the body detoxify.
From a purely scientific perspective, it is not really proven that these deposits of toxins actually exist, especially since it is often not entirely clear which substances are even meant. Our body has its own "detoxification system," which is mainly operated by the liver and kidneys, filtering the blood and excreting toxins. Substances are also excreted through breathing and the skin, and we absorb important nutrients through the intestines. The intestines and skin actually work together. When the intestines cleanse themselves of too much sugar or unhealthy fats, this often shows on the skin. A healthy person usually does not need external assistance for detoxification.

Experiences with juice cleanses & dietary changes

Cleaning the body, even from the inside, is part of human nature and is practiced in various ways all over the world. It cannot be denied that many people who have chosen a cleanse have indeed had positive experiences. Why is that? We have also conducted the test.
The theory of slag accumulated in the body may not be entirely accurate, but it can be immensely helpful to relieve the body and especially the gastrointestinal tract a bit. The significant and important task of digestion is also reflected in sayings like: "it weighs on my stomach" or "it turns my stomach." Therefore, if you often feel sluggish and tired and have digestive problems, you can try a juice cleanse, so to speak, as a kick-start to get your digestion going again. Unhealthy foods like sugar, fats, and alcohol are not consumed during a cleanse. Instead, important vitamins and minerals are taken in the form of juices that are easily digestible. Perfect for a dietary change that can continue after the days of the cleanse.
In our self-test, a juice cleanse, we found that cravings for sweets or salty foods decrease. You can also break the habit of drinking coffee during this time. Although it may initially manifest as headaches, it will subside over time, and it may even be that coffee does not taste good to you after your cleanse. Therefore, a cleanse can be seen not only as abstinence but as a start to a healthier lifestyle. Because fiber-rich whole grain products, high-quality protein, sufficient fluids, and enough exercise should be the basis of a healthy and balanced diet. After a cleanse, you may feel fitter and more motivated, and it may become easier for you to refrain from sweets, a second glass of wine, or junk food.

Conclusion

Alongside some things to consider, a cleanse offers many benefits. It is definitely advisable to speak with a doctor or an expert before undergoing a cleanse for an extended period. It is important that you do not view the cleanse as a quick solution to lose as much weight as possible in a relatively short time.
