Naturopath Training: Paracelsus Schools Focus on Cannabis and CBD

The multifaceted profession of the alternative practitioner is becoming increasingly popular. Many see alternative therapeutic approaches as a meaningful complement to conventional medicine and begin corresponding training. Natural active ingredients and their applications are an important part of the teaching and later in practice. In this spectrum, one of the oldest cultural and medicinal plants must not be missing – cannabis.

Paracelsus – Father of Naturopathy and Holistic Medicine

The Paracelsus Naturopath Schools have been one of the most well-known addresses for Naturopaths, for traditional European or Chinese naturopathy, psychotherapy, Ayurveda, and a variety of other therapeutic specialized training programs in the German-speaking world for decades. During the specialized training in aromatherapy, topics such as the production and composition of high-quality oils, the fundamentals of naturopathy, and massage applications in different areas are covered. Animal Naturopaths are also trained at the Paracelsus Schools, as a natural healing approach for animals is also trending. The Association of German Animal Naturopaths e.V. counts over 3000 members, making it the largest professional association for animal naturopaths. Currently, instructors from the 55 Paracelsus Schools offer numerous seminars as well as training and continuing education programs. From Kiel to Düsseldorf to Passau and Zurich – a dense network spans Germany and parts of Switzerland.

Naturopathy Unthinkable Without Hemp

The cultural and medicinal plant cannabis is undoubtedly one of the oldest and most significant plants for humanity. Hemp is known not only for its industrial use but also specifically for its medicinal therapeutic applications. The first references to this were documented in a Chinese textbook approximately 4700 years old. The Chinese Emperor Shen Nung (2700 BC) used hemp resin, for example, for rheumatism, gout, and women's diseases. In Europe, Hildegard of Bingen relied on the effects of hemp in the twelfth century, and even today, hemp is used for various ailments in remote Nepalese valleys. Modern science and medicine also clearly demonstrate the versatile applications of cannabis and cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD).

Seminar Series Cannabis – A Plant with Enormous Potential

The interest in cannabis, and recently specifically in the non-psychoactive and legal compound CBD, is significant. Much has changed in recent years, and particularly CBD products made from approved regionally grown EU industrial hemp are becoming increasingly popular. These include the following CBD products and hemp foods:

  • Hemp Extract CBD Creams
  • CBD Oils
  • CBD Tinctures
  • CBD Hemp Flowers
  • Hemp Tea
  • High-Quality Hemp Seed Oil
  • Hemp Protein

Of course, the topic of hemp should not be missing at the Naturopath Schools and must be part of the training and continuing education. In a seminar series that began in 2019 at the Paracelsus School in Mannheim and is now being continued at the Paracelsus School in Nuremberg, instructor Dr. Daniel Feurstein lectured on the plant hemp, its active ingredients, and their areas of application. “I see real potential in these seminars, as all participants are very open and eager to learn, and a lot of knowledge can be imparted in a limited time. In small groups, the individual focal points can be well explored and discussed. The goal is to further expand this seminar series to implement cannabis and its active ingredients like CBD as an integral part of the naturopath training and continuing education,” explains Dr. Feurstein. Not only humans can benefit from the diverse effects of cannabinoids. Due to the endocannabinoid system present in all mammals, the use of these natural active substances is also well-suited for the veterinary field, thus providing animal naturopaths with an opportunity to meaningfully expand their repertoire.
