Medicinal cannabis & vaporizer: Vaporizing herbs instead of burning them
Vaporizers are considered a modern and gentler alternative to smoking medicinal cannabis, CBD flowers, and aromatic medicinal herbs. By vaporizing instead of burning, plant ingredients are efficiently released while harmful combustion substances are largely avoided. In this article, you will learn about the benefits of vaporizing, which temperatures are suitable for different herbs, and what beginners should pay attention to when using and cleaning a vaporizer. It all started shortly after the discovery of fire, as our ancestors quickly understood that plants are not only suitable as a food source. The often active-ingredient-containing smoke of medicinal and intoxicating plants was used, among other things, to relieve pain, but depending on the vaporized herb, it could also induce a euphoric state. And especially nowadays, vaporizing dried flowers and herbs is considered a sensible alternative support.

Why vaporize instead of smoke? Advantages of vaporizers
The pipes of the past are history. State-of-the-art and automatic vaporizers dominate the market and represent an alternative to harmful smoking. Unlike classic smoking, cannabis flowers and herbs of all kinds are not burned during vaporizing but vaporized at a significantly lower temperature. This way, no smoke harmful to the lungs is produced. The advantage of inhalation compared to oral or sublingual application is that the active ingredients can be absorbed faster and thus unfold their effects more quickly. This is a crucial factor, especially for pain. Besides medical cannabis and CBD hemp flowers, hops, sage, chamomile, eucalyptus, and peppermint are also suitable for vaporizing. However, those who have never used a vaporizer before should pay attention to a few small things at the beginning, as vaporizers are not directly comparable to e-cigarettes in their handling.

Vaporizer tips for beginners: handling & inhalation
- Temperature: The right temperature for vaporizing herbs is not always the same. Vaporizers can generally be heated up to 220 degrees Celsius. Only above this does the harmful combustion process occur. Basically, all herbs are heated at low to medium-high temperatures. For example, lavender is heated up to 130 degrees, chamomile up to a maximum of 190 degrees, and CBD hemp flowers and medical cannabis at about 180 degrees.
- Herbs: The herbs must be of high quality and well dried and are crushed accordingly before filling into the herb chamber of the vaporizer. So-called “grinders” can be used for this. It is important to achieve the right size of the plant parts. Too large parts are only insufficiently vaporized; small parts, on the other hand, can clog the herb chamber – the golden middle ground is recommended.
- Inhalation: Inhaling with a vaporizer cannot be compared to puffing on a cigarette or even an e-cigarette. Quick, short, and intense pulls are not recommended. The best vapor-active ingredient result is achieved by slow, light, and steady pulling on the mouthpiece.
- Maintenance: The often very robust devices may look indestructible but must be kept in good condition. The herb chamber, in particular, should be cleaned regularly. When heating the plant material, the herbs leave behind resins, among other things, which become difficult to remove after prolonged stay and thus clog the chamber in the long term. Therefore, it is advisable to empty and clean the herb chamber after use. Of course, the briefly heated herbs and flowers can be heated again on the same day, provided they are not already dark brown or heavily crumbled.

Vaporizing cannabis instead of smoking – what matters?
When vaporizing cannabis, controlled heating of the plant material is especially important. A modern vaporizer for medical cannabis allows the temperature to be precisely adjusted and thus adapts the vaporization process to the plant material used. Unlike smoking, combustion is not the focus but the controlled heating of cannabis flowers and CBD flowers. That is exactly why more and more people are dealing with the question of how to vaporize herbs and what differences exist between smoking and vaporizing. Another important aspect is the different composition of plant material. CBD hemp flowers, medical cannabis, and classic herbs each contain different plant ingredients. The appropriate temperature can therefore have a decisive influence on the aroma and the vapor produced. Those who start vaporizing herbs should familiarize themselves with the recommended temperature settings of the respective material and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Vaporizing CBD flowers: pay attention to temperature and quality
Those who want to vaporize CBD flowers should pay particular attention to the quality and condition of the flowers used. Well-dried plant material usually heats more evenly than very moist or densely compacted material. Before filling, the plant material can be gently crushed, but it should not be ground too finely. A uniform structure supports as homogeneous heating as possible within the herb chamber. For a CBD vaporizer or a vaporizer for dry herbs, the temperature setting is also relevant. Too low temperatures can cause the desired plant ingredients to be extracted only incompletely from the material. At too high temperatures, the plant material can be unnecessarily overheated. Therefore, it is advisable always to observe the technical specifications of the vaporizer used as well as the temperature ranges intended for the respective plant material.
Proper use of vaporizer for medical cannabis
A medical cannabis vaporizer differs significantly in its application from a classic cigarette. Instead of inhaling quickly and strongly, the vapor is usually taken in slowly and controlled. Especially vaporizer beginners should first familiarize themselves with the pull behavior of their device and follow the instructions. The filling amount of the herb chamber and the proper preparation of the plant material can also influence the vapor experience. Besides the actual application, vaporizer maintenance also plays an important role. Residues from the herbs used can accumulate over time in the heating chamber, on screens, and in the air path. Regular cleaning ensures that the device remains functional and the airflow is not unnecessarily impaired. Especially with regular herb vaporizing, cleaning should therefore be an integral part of device care.
Vaporizing herbs – not just cannabis
Vaporizing herbs is not limited exclusively to cannabis. Depending on the suitable device and manufacturer’s instructions, various dried plants such as chamomile, lavender, sage, peppermint, or hops can also be used. Each plant has its own composition and thus different properties when heated. Those who want to vaporize herbs should therefore always ensure that the plant material used is explicitly suitable for this type of application. For beginners, vaporizing herbs offers an interesting opportunity to explore different plant aromas and temperature settings. Crucial are good product quality, proper preparation of the plant material, and controlled temperature settings. This way, the topic vaporizing herbs instead of smoking can be viewed in a differentiated manner – regardless of whether it is about CBD flowers, medical cannabis, or other suitable herbs.
