Cannabis Study: Hemp Protein Beats Other Plant-Based Proteins in Amino Acid Comparison

More and more people are discovering plant-based proteins as a sustainable alternative to animal protein sources. But which plant-based protein is truly the highest quality? A recent laboratory analysis by HANAFSAN provides clarity: In a direct comparison of various plant-based protein sources, it becomes clear that hemp protein ranks at the top in terms of amino acid composition, digestibility, and biological value.
HANAFSAN Hemp Protein Put to the Test

The Scientific Basis: HANAFSAN Analysis of Plant Protein

As part of a study, Dr. Feurstein Medical Hemp GmbH (HANAFSAN) commissioned Quality Services International GmbH (QSI) to conduct a detailed laboratory analysis. Several plant protein sources were examined, including hemp protein, pea protein, rice protein, and soy protein. The goal was to compare their amino acid profiles and assess their nutritional value. The result is clear: hemp protein has the most balanced and complete amino acid profile of all tested plant proteins.

Results in Detail: Amino Acid Profile of HANAFSAN Hemp Protein

The QSI test reports show that HANAFSAN organic hemp protein (40% protein content) contains all 20 proteinogenic amino acids – including the nine essential ones that the body cannot produce on its own.

Amino Acid Content (mg/kg)

  • Arginine 44,900
  • Glutamic Acid 72,600
  • Asparagine 40,400
  • Leucine 25,000
  • Valine 19,300
  • Lysine 17,000
  • Isoleucine 15,400
  • Phenylalanine 17,700
  • Threonine 13,000
  • Tryptophan 3,600

These values illustrate: hemp protein provides all essential amino acids in an ideal ratio. No other tested plant protein achieved such a harmonious profile.

What Makes Hemp Protein So High-Quality?

The biological value of a protein measures how well the body can convert the ingested protein into its own protein. Hemp protein achieves top scores here because it:

  • contains all essential amino acids,
  • provides a balanced ratio among them,
  • and is easily digestible – without known allergens or anti-nutrients.

Particularly noteworthy are:

  • Arginine: supports circulation and the cardiovascular system.
  • Leucine, Isoleucine, Valine (BCAAs): promote muscle building and recovery.
  • Lysine: often limiting in plant-based diets, but present in ideal amounts in hemp.

Comparison with Other Plant Protein Sources

The HANAFSAN investigation compared hemp protein with several plant proteins – the result clearly favored cannabis:

  • Pea Protein: While pea protein provides a lot of arginine and lysine, it contains little methionine. This leads to an unbalanced amino acid profile – hemp protein performs significantly better here.
  • Rice Protein: Rice protein scores with high methionine content but has a deficiency in lysine. Hemp protein compensates for this imbalance, thus offering a more rounded nutrient base.
  • Soy Protein: Soy protein is considered complete but is often genetically modified and potentially allergenic. Hemp protein is free from genetic modification, hypoallergenic, and richer in certain amino acids like arginine.
  • Pumpkin Seed and Sunflower Protein: These proteins contain individual valuable amino acids but are less balanced in the overall profile. Hemp protein impresses with its natural balance and high availability of nutrients.

Sustainable, Natural, and Nutrient-Rich

Another plus point: hemp is an environmentally friendly crop. It grows quickly, requires little water, no pesticides, and improves soil structure. Thus, hemp protein is not only nutritionally but also ecologically the most sustainable choice among plant protein sources. Additionally, hemp protein provides:

  • Fiber for healthy digestion,
  • Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in the ideal ratio of 1:3,
  • as well as important micronutrients such as iron, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin E.

Practical Application in Daily Life

HANAFSAN hemp protein powder can be easily integrated into daily nutrition:

  • As a post-workout shake for muscle recovery, in breakfast (e.g., smoothies, porridge, muesli),
  • or as a baking ingredient for breads, pancakes
  • or energy bars. Thanks to its mild nutty flavor, it is versatile – completely without artificial additives or sweeteners.

Conclusion: Hemp Protein is the New Benchmark for Plant Proteins

The HANAFSAN cannabis study clearly demonstrates: Hemp protein provides the best amino acid profile among plant protein sources. It combines highest biological value, natural tolerability, and ecological sustainability – an overall superior protein for health, sports, and the environment.
