Cannabidiol (CBD) for rosacea: New study shows promising results
A new study from the Catholic University of Korea suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) could significantly reduce inflammatory processes in rosacea. The results indicate that CBD could become a promising complementary or alternative treatment option for relieving redness and skin changes in the future.Rosacea is one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin diseases worldwide and affects an estimated five to ten percent of the population. Typical symptoms include persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels, papules, pustules, and in some cases eye discomfort. Although various treatment options exist, many affected individuals struggle with recurring flare-ups and insufficient therapeutic success. A study published in August 2025 in the journal BMB Reports by the Catholic University of Korea now provides exciting new insights: Cannabidiol (CBD) could represent an effective and low-side-effect alternative or complement to existing rosacea therapies.
Why is rosacea so difficult to treat?
The exact causes of rosacea are still not fully understood today. Experts assume that several factors interact:
- genetic predisposition,
- dysregulation of the immune system,
- environmental factors such as UV radiation,
- changes in the skin flora,
- neurovascular disorders.
Current treatments mainly rely on antibiotics such as metronidazole, anti-inflammatory agents, or vasoconstrictive creams. However, these therapies often come with disadvantages:
- skin irritations,
- limited effectiveness,
- possible antibiotic resistance,
- frequent relapses.
Therefore, researchers have been searching for years for new approaches that more specifically influence the actual inflammatory mechanisms of the disease.
What is cannabidiol (CBD)?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive component of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). Unlike THC, CBD does not cause a high. In recent years, CBD has increasingly established itself in dermatology due to its properties. Studies indicate that CBD can:
- be anti-inflammatory,
- antioxidative,
- immunomodulatory,
- cell-protective
act. Furthermore, CBD interacts with the so-called endocannabinoid system, which plays an important role in the health and balance of the skin.
The new study: CBD against rosacea
The Korean researchers investigated the effect of CBD in an experimental rosacea model. For this purpose, a rosacea-like skin disease was induced in mice using the pro-inflammatory peptide LL-37. Subsequently, different treatment groups were examined:
- CBD only,
- metronidazole only,
- combination of CBD and metronidazole.
The aim was to find out whether cannabidiol can reduce inflammation and improve typical rosacea symptoms.
Significant reduction of redness
The results were impressive. Treatment with CBD led to a significant reduction of:
- skin redness,
- visible vascular changes,
- inflammatory skin lesions.
The effect was particularly strong with the combination of CBD and metronidazole.
Less skin thickening and inflammatory cells
Another key result was the significant reduction of so-called epidermal thickening. In addition, CBD reduced the number of mast cells in the skin. These immune cells play a crucial role in the development of inflammation and promote:
- vasodilation,
- swelling,
- tissue changes.
The inhibition of these processes could explain why the skin symptoms improved significantly under CBD.
CBD inhibits multiple inflammatory pathways simultaneously
Particularly interesting are the findings on the molecular mechanisms of action. The researchers were able to show that cannabidiol inhibits several important inflammatory signaling pathways simultaneously:
- ERK signaling pathway
- JNK signaling pathway
- p38-MAPK signaling pathway
These signaling pathways belong to the so-called MAPK system, which is significantly involved in chronic inflammatory processes. In rosacea, these signaling pathways are overactive and promote the production of numerous pro-inflammatory mediators. By inhibiting these mechanisms, CBD significantly reduced the release of various inflammatory mediators.
Fewer inflammatory mediators
The study showed, among other things, a reduction of the following inflammatory markers:
- TNF-α
- IL-1β
- IL-6
- IL-8
- IL-13
- CXCL10
These mediators are considered important drivers of the chronic inflammatory reaction in rosacea.
CBD reduces oxidative stress
Another important finding concerns the so-called oxidative stress. In rosacea, increased free oxygen radicals (ROS) are produced, which:
- intensify inflammation,
- damage the skin barrier,
- accelerate skin aging.
The researchers observed that CBD significantly reduced the formation of these free radicals. This could explain why cannabidiol acts not only as an anti-inflammatory but also as a skin-protective agent.
Is CBD a new therapy option for rosacea?
The study authors come to a promising conclusion: Cannabidiol could in the future represent a novel treatment option for rosacea – especially for patients who do not respond adequately to conventional therapies or suffer from side effects. The combination of CBD + metronidazole appears particularly interesting. This showed the strongest improvements in skin symptoms. However, the researchers point out that further clinical studies in humans are necessary before concrete therapy recommendations can be made.
Conclusion: Great potential for CBD in dermatology
The new study provides convincing evidence that cannabidiol (CBD) can simultaneously influence several central inflammatory mechanisms of rosacea. The key findings:
- Reduction of facial redness
- Decrease in skin thickening
- Fewer inflammatory immune cells
- Inhibition of important inflammatory signaling pathways
- Protection against oxidative stress
- Enhanced effect in combination with metronidazole
The results open new perspectives for the treatment of chronic inflammatory skin diseases and underscore the growing potential of CBD in dermatology.
FAQ: CBD and rosacea
Can CBD support rosacea?
Current studies suggest that cannabidiol (CBD) can influence inflammation-related processes in the skin. Initial research results are promising but do not replace medical treatment and need further investigation.
How is CBD applied for sensitive or irritated skin?
CBD is used both internally in the form of oils and externally via skincare products. Many users rely on high-quality, natural products such as CBD oils or CBD-based natural cosmetics, which can be well integrated into a gentle skincare routine.
Is the use of CBD safe?
CBD is generally considered well tolerated. However, mild side effects can occur individually, such as fatigue or skin reactions with topical use. For sensitive skin, a patch test and consultation with medical professionals are recommended.
Which CBD products are commonly used?
In everyday life, especially CBD oils and nourishing CBD natural cosmetics are used, focusing on quality and natural ingredients. You can find a selection of corresponding products in our category for CBD natural cosmetics and CBD oils, which fit perfectly into a conscious skincare routine.
